This location is one of the guide's favorite spots. Mokoli'i is Located on the east shore and this area offers cooler temperatures during the summer months. This cone shaped outcropping of lava off Kualoa Point resembles the peasant's chapeau worn by rural Chinese - thus the name: Chinaman's Hat. The Hawaiians named the island mokoli'i and that is an interesting story in itself. The reef surrounding the island supports an abundance of marine life and is one of the Oahu's best offshore islands. You can see Chinaman's Hat from numerous vantage points along the coast but the best view is to actually go out to the island. The best way to get there is via one of our kayaks. On the island is a small beach nestled in a secluded cove. There is also a small cave carved out of lava and a steep volcanic cone perfect for exploring. The view of the Koolau Mountains, Mokapun peninsula, Kahaluu, Kaneohe, and Kailua is unmatched. Climbing the volcanic cone takes about 40 minutes round trip, is strenuous, and can be tricky so be careful.
Nestled in a secluded cove, the beach on the outer side of Chinaman's Hat is worth the trip regardless of whether you climb the cone or not. It adjoins a small cave carved out of the lava and is continually washed by deep-sea waves coming in from the open Pacific. Exploring the cave and the cove is a perfect place to mingle with local fish and examine the numerous urchins and sea cucumbers on the lava walls. Mokoli'i  was significant during the Hawaiian time because of the adze found here. On the south eastern section of the beach you can still see evidence of an area where the Hawaiian would mold adze spear heads. The island is also home to many island birds.  Bird watchers will enjoy the hike to the top of the cone because it passes right by many of the birds nest. Eggs, baby and mothers can all be seen nestled in along the trail. Just around the corner from the Mokoli'i is Kaneohe bay. Here there is a very nice secluded beach.  Along this beach are some of the largest, intact ancient fish ponds located in the Hawaiian island chain. The area is home to many species of marine life. Here you will see turtles. Occasionally monk seals can be seen basking on the beach. In the winter months Hump back whales can be seen from the kayaks. China Mans hat has a lot to see and explore. This is a great place to spend a day away from the bustle of Waikiki.
